Frequently Asked Questions regarding iPhone Unlocking
What iPhones can be unlocked?
All models of the iPhone can be unlocked - from the iPhone 2G, 3G, 4, 4S all the way through to the latest iPhone 5, PROVIDED the carrier supports our service.
You can see which carriers support our IMEI-based unlock on the pricing page. What firmware and baseband you have is unimportant - we can unlock ALL firmwares and basebands (including 04.11.08, 04.12.02, 05.16.05 etc), now and new ones which come out in the future. The only important question we have is 'what network is your iPhone locked to'.
What is your unlock?
Our sim unlock is an IMEI-based permanent sim unlock for all iPhone models. Because it is IMEI-based and done at the carrier level, no jailbreak is required.
What about the DMCA act which makes unlocking my handset illegal?
As of January 13th 2013, unlocking your handset without the carriers permission is illegal.
Fortunately, our unlocks are official IMEI-based unlocks done via requests from the carrier and 100% legal.
We may not be the cheapest, but you can use our service worry-free as we don't alter the firmware on the iPhone in any way.
And because this unlock is carrier approved and does not require a clumsy "jailbreak", it means you can update the OS on your iPhone when new firmware comes out, and sync your device with iTunes.
Why are some iPhones sim-locked?
The reason many network providers SIM lock their phones is that they offer phones at a discount to customers in exchange for a contract to pay for the use of the network for a specified time period, usually between one and three years.
This business model allows the company to recoup the cost of the phone over the life of the contract. Such discounts are worth up to several hundred pounds, Vodafone for example give you a 4S free of charge if you sign up to a 2 year contract! If the phones were not locked, users might sign a contract with one company, get the discounted phone, then stop paying the monthly bill (thus breaking the contract) and start using the phone on another network or even sell the phone for a profit. SIM locking makes it more difficult to do this.
Do I need a sim card from the network my iPhone is locked to?
An emphatic no - ANY sim card will unlock your iPhone once your unlock is processed. For example, if you have an AT&T iPhone, you can unlock it with a T-Mobile sim card.
Do I need to be located in the country my iPhone is locked to in order to unlock the device?
Once you receive the unlock confirmation, you can unlock your handset in any country, or indeed at sea(!) - all you need is an iTunes connection.
Do I need to send the iPhone to you in order for it to be unlocked? The whole procedure is remote, once your IMEI is marked as unlocked by ourselves you simply connect your iPhone to iTunes for unlocking. All the whitelisting is handled by ourselves.
Why does your service take 6 hours to 3 days? I've seen a website that can unlock in 5 minutes.
Most iPhone unlocking sites out there are scam websites - anyone selling you software to unlock an iPhone is a scam, as software cannot unlock an iPhone (it hasn't been able to since 2008).
A carrier-approved unlock is the ONLY way to sim unlock an iPhone, and indeed the only legal way. Getting the carriers approval takes time. If someone is willing to lie to you to get your money, they are not going to refund you either despite any "money back guarantees" they may offer.
Does the iPhone need to be activated?
Our unlock works in any situation - if iTunes is asking for your AT&T phone number and ZIP code we can still unlock it. And we can unlock those already activated using iTunes or iCloud, or one which has been freshly restored.
What is a jailbreak?
Jailbreaking is where you run some software on your PC or Mac with your iPhone connected, in order to gain access to the operating system, allowing users to download additional applications, extensions, and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store. It is NOT a sim unlock.
Jailbreaks are free - do not pay for them. Any site selling software to sim unlock your iPhone is actually just selling a jailbreak.
Why don't you sell Gevey sims?
Gevey sims are one-off hacks which are designed for a particular firmware version in order to unlock your iPhone. They are illegal and if you update your firmware, you lose your investment. They are also expensive.
Can you unlock iPhones which have been blacklisted?
We can unlock handsets which have been barred or reported as lost or stolen dependent on network. For AT&T units there is no additional charge, but for Verizon and other networks outside the USA there will be an additional charge to unlock barred handsets of $50.00 . You can check if your handset is barred prior to purchase by going to http://www.checkmend.com/ (for handsets locked to USA networks)
Please be aware however that if the handset is reported as blocked, or lost or stolen, then it will only work outside the country it was barred in (as the networks share the blacklist and will refuse service).
How does the unlock work?
You tell us your IMEI, what network your iPhone is locked to, and what model iPhone you have on this page. Having made payment, we then mark your IMEI as unlocked within Apple's IMEI database - once this is done we send you an email confirming this. You then simply connect your iPhone to iTunes in order to complete the unlock. No stress, no hassle, no drama. Your unlock is guaranteed and is also permanent, meaning you can safely update your handset and sync with iTunes without ever worrying about it re-locking.
My iPhone 3GS has the 06.15.00 baseband, can you unlock it?
Yes - basically just purchase our unlock and once you receive your unlock email our support team can tell you how to downgrade your baseband.
What networks can you unlock?
The Buy Now page will tell you if we can unlock your handset based on the information you provide.
Certain network and iPhone combinations cannot be unlocked, we will tell you this before purchase. The device, iOS firmware version or modem firmware version isn't important.
I don't know what network my handset is locked to, what do I do?
No problem. Simply purchase a Network Check
How long does it take after purchase to get my unlock?
Depends on which network your iPhone is locked to - it varies between a few hours and 10 days. Unlocks are processed during normal working hours (Monday to Friday).
How does the unlock procedure work?
When can I get it?
How much is it?
It depends on the network and your handset model! Starting at £24.99 for an iPhone locked to AT&T - we unfortunately aren't in charge of the price but we are competitive and we will provide you with an excellent service, even after your handset is unlocked. Got a question unrelated to unlocking? Just call us or use our Live Chat and ask! We're happy to help.
The website says my unlock is available 'soon' and I can Pre-Order. What is a Pre-Order?
A pre-order simply means that those unlocks are currently offline whilst we are in negotiations to confirm a price with the carrier and Apple. Hence why the price is always $32.00. Please note this isn't the final unlocking price which may be substantially more expensive - see the pricelist for typical unlock prices, they vary between $29.99 and $189 so expect something in this region.
Once our negotiations are concluded, you will be emailed the final price which will also be on the website, and you can then complete your order and purchase the full unlock, which will be discounted by £19.99.
This gives you the opportunity to get unlocked the fastest way, rather than having to keep checking our website to see if the unlock is online yet.
Remember - we get our unlocks before, and cheaper than, anyone else.
